I am a comic lover. Although I don’t have the super nerdy knowledge of comics that I would love. However, I appreciate well-done comic movies when they are done. However, this movie proved to me that the only comic movies worth my time are Marvel. There are pieces I loved about this movie and there was a bunch that I hate about this movie. I am going to break down my official rating into different aspects so you can understand my love/hate relationship with this movie.
The Venom aspect of this movie gets a 5 out of 5 for me. I loved Venom’s snarky attitude. I loved how Eddie fights with Venom on what is appropriate made me laugh. I wanted more of this in the movie. These moments of Venom’s snark and relationship with Eddie reminded me of Deadpool and everything I love about Deadpool. But this movie couldn’t touch Deadpool in the end.
I hated the long dragged-out Eddie Brock history part of the movie. You could easily jump to an hour into the movie and enjoy it. I didn’t care about the relationship aspect of this movie. To be completely honest, I would love if the comic book/superhero movies to stop with all the romance. If I want to watch a romantic movie, I will gladly watch Bridget Jones for the millionth time. I am over it being done in these movies. It’s not like it adds any depth or makes me invested in the characters anymore. It’s a huge turn-off for me. I like that John Wick is mostly action with little fluff.
Michelle Williams did nothing for this movie. Although I don’t know that I have seen a Michelle Williams movie that I think she rocked. I have to say the only stuff I really know about her has to deal with her relationship with Heath Ledger (massive Ledger lover here).
Riz Ahmed did a fine job as Carlton Drake. I couldn’t place him for the longest time. I knew he was familiar but couldn’t put it together. I have watched THE OA on Netflix and he was in it (love that show).
I was a little disappointed that there were some other known faces that barely had a role in the movie. I didn’t understand the point of having them in the movie or giving them lines when they did nothing for the plot. It’s a waste of time in my opinion. Yet the majority of this movie is a waste of time. Has anyone in Hollywood been paying attention to what the viewers want? I feel like more and more we get crappy adaptions of things because there are no original screenplay writers anymore. I feel like Hollywood has gotten lazy. If they are going to do adaptions, they need to make sure the adaptions are good and speak to the original.
I give Venom, himself a 5 out of 5 stars.
I give Eddie Brock a 2.5 out of 5 stars.
I give the first half of the movie a .5 out of 5 stars.
I give the second half of the movie a 3 out of 5 stars.
Overall, I will watch this movie again. I will likely skip to the beginning of the good stuff and watch it from there.
