The Borgias

This week for the TV Tuesday feature, I am reviewing the historical drama, The Borgias. This show ran from 2011 to 2013. It is rated TV-MA for the following reasons: severe sex & nudity, moderate violence & gore, moderate profanity, and mild alcohol/drugs/smoking. There are 3 seasons for a total of 29 episodes. Each episode has a running time of 50 minutes. Starring in this series are Jeremy Irons, Francois Arnaud, and Holliday Grainger. The following plot overview is provided from IMDB: In the fifteenth century, Pope Alexander VI tries to control all power in Italy with the help of his several sons, through murder, intrigue, and marriage alliances.

I feel like the theme of this show should be “too little, too late.” It took until the last episode of the first season to make me even care about the characters. Then the show finally picked up pace and got good and it ended. Ugh! I get frustrated with the true crime documentaries that I cover often. But getting that frustrated with a show or movie is rare. I will dislike even hate a show without this level of frustration involved. I do not know if the frustration comes from having a great cast with such a lackluster story. Or a lackluster story that shows potential and growth and then cuts itself short. I just do not have any other words for the series other than Ugh!

I give this series 3.5 out of 5 stars.

Tomorrow for the Missing Person Wednesday feature, I am highlighting the Doe Network profile of Terry Bernard Smith. Next week for the TV Tuesday feature, I am reviewing the dramatic fantasy series, Locke & Key. Until then keep binge-watching the episodes; Nerd out!
