The Hate You Give by Angie Thomas

This week for the Fiction Friday feature, I am reviewing the young adult fiction novel, The Hate You Give by Angie Thomas. This book was published in February 2017 by HarperCollins and has a page count of 444 pages. This novel is part of the Garden Heights series. The audiobook is 11 hours & 50 minutes in length and is narrated by Bahni Turpin. The following overview is provided from the B&N page: Sixteen-year-old Starr Carter moves between two worlds: the poor neighborhood where she lives and the fancy suburban prep school she attends. The uneasy balance between these worlds is shattered when Starr witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend Khalil at the hands of a police officer. Khalil was unarmed. Soon afterwards, his death is a national headline. Some are calling him a thug, maybe even a drug dealer and a gangbanger. Protesters are taking to the streets in Khalil’s name. Some cops and the local drug lord try to intimidate Starr and her family. What everyone wants to know is: what really went down that night? And the only person alive who can answer that is Starr. But what Starr does—or does not—say could upend her community. It could also endanger her life.

This was a powerful read. I felt all sorts of emotions as I read this book. This is a must-read for anyone but especially young adults coming up in the current world. This is a valuable story from a different perspective than what was mainstream in my youth. This novel is so well-written that you can’t be human to have some emotions while reading this. This book contains valuable lessons for readers of all ages and backgrounds. This book highlights society’s cultural need for more empathy and understanding. If you haven’t read this already, please read it as soon as you can.

I give this book 5 out of 5 stars,

Tomorrow for the Missing Person Saturday feature, I am highlighting the missing person’s case of Christopher Lawrence Pollen. Next week for the Fiction Friday feature, I am reviewing the children’s Audible Original, Beezers by Brandon T. Snider. Until then keep reading on; Nerd out!
