If I Was Your Girl by Meredith Russo

This week for the Fiction Friday feature, I am reviewing the young adult romance novel, If I Was Your Girl by Meredith Russo. This book was published in May 2016 by Flatiron Books and has a page count of 320 pages. The audiobook is read by Samia Mounts and is 7 hours & 0 minutes in length. The following overview is provided from the B&N page: Amanda Hardy is the new girl in school. Like anyone else, all she wants is to make friends and fit in. But Amanda is keeping a secret, and she’s determined not to get too close to anyone. But when she meets sweet, easygoing Grant, Amanda can’t help but start to let him into her life. As they spend more time together, she realizes just how much she is losing by guarding her heart. She finds herself yearning to share with Grant everything about herself, including her past. But Amanda’s terrified that once she tells him the truth, he won’t be able to see past it. Because the secret that Amanda’s been keeping? It’s that at her old school, she used to be Andrew. Will the truth cost Amanda her new life, and her new love?

This story is beautiful and brilliant. The message of acceptance and love is told in a heartfelt way. I appreciate the author’s notes about the lack of hate/resistance found in the story given the real-life context some of us are aware of when discussing the same topic. This book took me on an emotional rollercoaster and at times had me in tears. I can’t express properly everything this book made me feel. However, I am certain that this is a must-read novel.

I give this book 4.5 out of 5 stars.

Tomorrow for the Missing Person Saturday feature, I am highlighting the missing person’s case of Michael L. Shackelford. Next week for the Fiction Friday feature, I am reviewing the young adult science fiction novel, A Spark of White Fire by Sangu Mandanna. Until then keep reading on; Nerd out!
