The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon by Stephen King

This week for the Fiction Friday feature, I am reviewing the horror novel, The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon by Stephen King. This book was published in April 1999 by Scribner and has a page count of 224 pages. The audiobook is read by Anne Heche and is 6 hours & 29 minutes in length. The following overview is provided from the B&N page: During a six-mile hike on the Maine-New Hampshire branch of the Appalachian Trail, nine-year-old Trisha McFarland quickly tires of the constant bickering between her older brother and her recently divorced father. But when she wanders off by herself, she becomes lost in a wilderness maze full of peril and terror. As night falls, Trisha has only her ingenuity as a defense against the elements, and only her courage and faith to withstand her mounting fears. For solace she tunes her headphones to broadcasts of Boston Red Sox baseball games and follows the gritty performances of her hero, relief pitcher Tom Gordon. And when the reception begin to fade, Trisha imagines that Tom Gordon is with her—the protector from an enemy who may or may not be imagined…one who is watching her, waiting for her in the dense, dark woods….

This was the first King novel I ever consumed. I liked it then and I like it even more now as an adult. I have a better understanding as an adult of what I liked about the book. There are pieces of the plot that deeply resonate with me. This book is dark in its theme, but it is not as dark as most of his other works. I would highly recommend this book to someone who wants to read King but is worried that his larger works may be too much. King is one of those amazing storytellers who writes in multiple genres and hybrids that it would be hard for someone not to find something that they enjoy. I highly recommend that if you haven’t picked up a King novel already to consume, you do so as soon as possible.

I give this novel 4 out of 5 stars.

Tomorrow for the Missing Person Saturday feature, I am highlighting the missing person’s case of Natosha Grayer. Next week for the Fiction Friday feature, I am reviewing the children’s animal fiction novel, MEOW.Org: The Cat-Napping Coper by Darby Lee Patterson. Until then keep reading on; Nerd out!
