Chapter 1: The Awakening (Part 2 of 4)

“Here, drink this. You will feel better once you get some food in you.” He nudged a rabbit in my direction.

“What do you mean drink? Rabbit is meant to be cooked and eaten.” I was frustrated with his vague instructions. I was still spiraling with emotions and did not have the patience for such games.

“Trust me. Just hold it near your mouth and focus completely on the rabbit. Your instincts will take over and do what needs to be done.” He nudged me with the rabbit. I begrudgingly took it from him and brought it up to eye level. Suddenly my sense sharpened on the rabbit and my instincts kicked in. The feeling as my teeth punctured the rabbit’s flesh was odd yet satisfying. My thirst lessened the more I drank from the rabbit. As I lowered the rabbit from my lips, I saw Jasper approaching with another. Greedily, I snatched the animal hoping to satisfy my thirst. It took four rabbits before I was full, and the thirst gone.

“For now, you can eat all the animals you want. However, do not feed on another person until have trained you. Do you understand?” He cleaned a bit of blood from my face. Locking his eyes with mine so I knew how serious he was.

“Yes, I understand.” Looking around me, I realized that everything had taken on a new layer of beauty. Things seemed to have richer, and more depth in color than before. Everything smelled stronger and more pungent than ever. The stars were so bright, there also seemed to be more in the sky than I remembered.

“Does this ever go away?” I could hear animals of all sorts around me making their nighttime noises. I could easily spot an owl in the tree yards away or the bats flying in the dark night sky. Not only could I hear the stream, but I could smell it from the short walk it was from my current location. I couldn’t get over the taste of sticky iron that the blood left in my mouth. It reminded me of the time I had first tasted chocolate. I touched everything around me, the sensations more intense than I would have imagined. The roughness of the log was the opposite of the soft moss growing on one side. I was anxious when I eventually began to walk around. I was worried that I was being so loud that I would alert people to our location. Jasper would later inform me that all sounds would be louder for me for a bit. I would eventually adjust, and things would not be this way forever.

The pine needles were sharp against my skin, yet I felt invincible. I flashed back to my childhood playing with dried needles that had caused me much physical pain. I jumped when Jasper placed his hand on my shoulder.

“Eventually, the feelings of pain will die off. You still have some of the more human aspects of existence left in you. They will fade with time; as you forget what it means to be human.” He gave my shoulder a reassuring squeeze.

“That moment cannot come quick enough for me. I want to forget anything and everything that ties me to this human world,” I sighed.

“You were never truly part of that world. Your mother made sure of that.” Jasper stated that he had been there when my twin brother and I were born.

“I know that. I was always meant for a life away from them. But if my father could have beaten that out of me, he would have.” I sneered.
