This week for the Fiction Friday feature, I am reviewing the horror novel, Bag of Bones by Stephen King. This book was published in September 1998 by Scribner and has a page count of 529 pages. The audiobook is read by Stephen King and is 21 hours & 21 minutes in length. The following overview is provided from the B&N page: Set in the Maine territory King has made mythic, Bag of Bones recounts the plight of forty-year-old bestselling novelist Mike Noonan, who is unable to stop grieving following the sudden death of his wife Jo, and who can no longer bear to face the blank screen of his computer. Now his night are plagued by vivid nightmares, all set at the Maine summerhouse he calls Sara Laughs. Despite these dreams, or perhaps because of them, Mike returns to the lakeside getaway. There he finds his beloved Yankee town held in the grip of a powerful millionaire, Max Devore, who will do anything to take his three-year-old granddaughter away from her widowed young mother. As Mike is drawn into their struggle, as he falls in love with both mother and child, he is also drawn into the mystery of Sara Laughs, now the site of ghostly visitations, ever-escalating nightmares, and the sudden recovery of his writing ability. What are the forces that have been unleashed here-and what do they want of Mike Noonan?
I haven’t read this book since high school, and it is even more haunting now. I think as a teen I didn’t think certain aspects of this story would happen in modern society. Yet, this story is such a real hell for a lot of people. That adds to the emotional weight of this story. Let alone the terror you feel while consuming it. I highly recommend this book for anyone who wants a horror novel heavily set in reality is a small amount of supernatural influence.
I give this novel 4.5 out of 5 stars.
Tomorrow for the Missing Person Saturday feature, I am highlighting the missing person’s case of Santonio Daniels. Next week for the Fiction Friday feature, I am reviewing the young adult fantasy novel, Cinder by Marissa Meyer. Until then keep reading on; Nerd out!
