Premise: Tension in Suburbia

This summer had been filled with tension due to the newest neighbors on the cul-de-sac. Sonia had had a confrontation with them over her pride flag. They felt that because they attended a local church they had some moral high ground. Which was on par for a lot of people who moved to our little town. They would grin and wave at me at first until it became clear that I wasn’t okay with how they treated Sonia. The best part was that their child had figured out that Sonia and I were sisters and better yet, that our father was the preacher at the church. I wanted to snatch their joy from them so badly, however, our father had a better plan if they didn’t straighten up. He figured he could reign in their behavior with a few choice sermons, but I held little hope for that to work. After all, Sonia and I had grown up around people who could not cope with the times. Our father had done his best to be loving and compassionate like when he preached about Jesus. He even paid for us to change our last name so people who stop expecting us to be a certain way because we were the kids of a preacher. When our father overheard a muffled conversation between the neighbors and Lucille from across town, he decided to be more aggressive with his tactics. He asked our brother, Curtis, to come to church the next week and bring us with him. Curtis worked in the medical field, so I had some idea as to why my father wanted him to be there. But I was not expecting what happened next to happen. My father on the last day of summer invited all the LGBTQIA+ community to come to his church. He asked each of them to come up to the altar where he gave each of us an orchid and gave us each a blessing. Stephen and his wife Lillian absolutely lost it during the service. Stephen tore his shirt like a rabid animal while screaming at my father that he had disrespected the church and its teachings. Which is when members of the congregation that had never been warm to either Sonia or me stood up and quoted scripture at them. They could not give an explanation as to why they refused to acknowledge those parts of scripture while throwing every vile teaching at us. We now had bets on how long it would be before they moved from our neighborhood, which suddenly had a lot more houses with rainbow pride flags.
