Premise: A haunted house

I was excited about our group adventure this evening. Casey had managed to arrange for us to stay overnight in a haunted house. Copper Beech trees had a haunting effect as you drove up the long driveway to the main house. The outside of the house had a relatively normal appearance. It reminded me of a watercolor painting I once saw. It had been the home of a turn-of-the-century politician who according to record had been an awful master to his help. Each of us had been instructed to bring a limited arsenal of snacks and supplies. Amelia had brought broccoli as a snack and none of us could contain our laughter over it. For the most part, our evening was uneventful. However, it was at 2 a.m. that things took an interesting turn. Alexandra and I woke up to the sounds of footsteps out our window. The silver glow of the moon cast eerie shadows upon the wall. I had gone out in the hallway to see if there was anything to explain what was going on. I took a few steps towards Casey’s room when I felt a sharp pain in the bottom of my foot. If Alexandra hadn’t been holding so tightly to my hand, I may have screamed out loud. Alexandra bent down to discover that I had stepped on a cufflink that none of us recognized. Casey and Amelia had come to find us after they had heard weird noises outside of their window as well. We all stayed in the same room after that because no one could sleep, as none of us knew where the cufflink came from.
