Allies of the Night by Darren Shan

This week for the Fiction Friday feature, I am reviewing the young adult horror novel, Allies of the Night by Darren Shan. This book was published in November 2002 by Little,Brown and has a page count of 256 pages. The audiobook is 4 hours & 34 minutes in length and narrated by Ralph Lister. The following overview is provided from the B&N page: Darren Shan, Vampire Prince and “vampaneze” killer, faces his worst nightmare yet—school. But homework is the least of Darren’s problems. Bodies are piling up. Time is running out. And the past is catching up with the hunters fast.

I loved this book. This is a level of humor that I never really appreciated until I was an adult reading this book. For Darren to have been out of school for years and then thrust back in so they didn’t break their cover while in the town. This whole plotline hits me differently now because I understand the struggle for Darren even better. The things my kids are learning at their age is a higher level than when I was at age. Having to try and help my kids with their homework was rude awakening. I can only imagine what Darren felt like having to actually be a student again and with a gap in education. All the blasts from the pasts are fun but if something feel off, follow that instinct. I have enjoyed the building tension as we progress through these last books. It really makes the stakes tangible to the reader. I also would like the commend the readers who read this series as it was being published and had to wait between books. I don’t think I would have been able to handle that kind of wait. These last books are highly consumable and easily binge read. I highly recommend this series to young adult horror and fantasy fans.

I give this novel 4.5 out of 5 stars.

Tomorrow for the Missing Person Saturday feature, I am highlighting the missing person’s case of Presley Nicole Rau. Next week for the Fiction Friday feature, I am reviewing the young adult novel, When the Sky Fell on Splendor by Emily Henry. Until then keep reading on; Nerd out!
