This week for the Missing Person Wednesday feature, I am highlighting the missing person’s case of Austin Stephanos. Austin is classified as an endangered missing person. He has been missing since July 24th, 2015, and was last seen in Jupiter Inlet, Florida.
Austin was born on December 1st, 2000, and was 14 years old when he went missing. He is described as a white male, 5’2”, 120 lbs, strawberry blonde, and green eyes. Austin had a birthmark on his upper arm. He was last known to be wearing a long-sleeved black shirt, camouflage board shorts, and a gold necklace with cross.
Austin was last seen the morning of July 24th, he had left his house with his friend Austin to go fishing. The boy has texted their parents at 11 am and bought more than $100 worth of fuel from a marina in Jupiter, Florida at 1:30 pm. They had been using snapchat in the afternoon and the last message read, “we’re fucked.” Within a few hours of them leaving the Jupiter marina, they were hit by a storm that winds up to 40 mph. They never returned home, and their parent reported them missing by 5 pm. The coast guard began searching for the boys. On July 26th, the boat was found by air 65 miles off the coast, it was not recovered immediately. When a team arrived at that location to recover the boat it was not there. The boat was not recovered until March 2017 off the coast of Bermuda. Austin’s iPhone and fishing gear was on the boat but other items like a white yeti cooler, and life jackets were missing. Authorities were unable to recover any data from the iPhone, due to damage from long exposure to the elements. The boys have never been found and are presumed lost at sea.
If you have any information on Austin or his disappearance, please contact Sergeant James Pike of the Tequesta Police Department by phone at (561) 768-0500. Please make sure to reference case number TPD15OFF000347.
