Premise: a good reason to be afraid of the dark

I had been held captive as a child and ever since then, I was afraid of the dark. It was the middle of the night when I felt a knife against my throat. I did as I was instructed because I didn’t want anything to happen to my family as they had threatened. The depraved humans that kidnapped me, kept me in a locked room no bigger than a janitor’s closet. The only things in the darkroom were a mattress, a quilt, and a stuffed killer whale. I had been a fool, in the beginning, to think that kicking the door constantly would do any good. Instead, I got in a heap of trouble and the punishment generally meant I would be kicked until I was silent. They dyed my hair to make it easier to hide me in plain sight. Eventually, I figured out what things to praise about them that would allow me to bargain for more things and privileges. It would be a few years and many moves, but I would eventually be rescued.
