Onyx & Ivory by Mindee Arnett

This week for the Fiction Friday feature, I am reviewing the young adult historical romance novel, Onyx & Ivory by Mindee Arnett. This book was published in May 2018 by HarperCollins and has a page count of 528 pages. The audiobook is 14 hours & 56 minutes in length and is narrated by Khristine Hvam. The following overview is provided from the B&N page: They call her Traitor Kate. It’s a title Kate Brighton inherited from her father after he tried to assassinate the high king of Rime. Cast out the nobility, Kate now works for the royal courier service. Only the most skilled ride for the Relay and only the fastest survive, for when night falls, the drakes—deadly flightless dragons—come out to hunt. Fortunately, Kate has a secret edge: She is a wilder, born with forbidden magic that allows her to influence the minds of animals. And it’s this magic that leads her to a caravan massacred by drakes in broad daylight—the only survivor Corwin Tormaine, the son of the king. Her first love, the boy she swore to forget after he condemned her father to death. With their paths once more entangled, Kate and Corwin must put the past behind them to face this new threat and an even darker menace stirring in the kingdom.

This is a fantastic read. I loved the world-building and structure of the novel. I think telling this story from more than one perspective has depth and complexity that wouldn’t be there otherwise. It also allows for more tension to build, and the emotions of the characters are deeply felt. This is a well-written novel. I recommend this book to all fans of the young adult genre.

I give this novel 4.5 out of 5 stars.

Tomorrow for the Missing Person Saturday feature, I am highlighting the missing person’s case of Joanna Wright. Next week for the Fiction Friday feature, I am reviewing the Audible Original, The Mountain and The Sun by Kwame Dawes. Until then keep reading on; Nerd out!
