Rose Madder by Stephen King

This week for the Fiction Friday feature, I am reviewing the fantasy horror novel, Rose Madder by Stephen King. This book was published in June 1995 by Viking and has a page count of 400 pages. The audiobook is 17 hours & 22 minutes in length and is narrated by Blair Brown. The following overview is provided from the B&N page: After surviving fourteen years of hell in a violently abusive marriage, Rosie Daniels finally summons the courage to flee for her life. But leaving her husband, Norman, for a new city and a new start is a very daunting prospect. It’s hard for Rosie not to keep looking over her shoulder, and with good reason—Norman’s a police officer with the instincts of a predator, a force of relentless terror and savagery…a man almost mythic in his monstrosity. He’s very good at finding people, even if he is losing his mind. Rosie’s only hope for salvation may lie in a far more dangerous place, where she must become her own myth and the woman she never knew she could be…

For those triggered by domestic violence, please do not read this novel as that is the center of the plot. This is a fantastically written character-driven plot of a novel. This novel has the least amount of problematic language in it. I think is this a great fictionalized presentation of what it is like to flee an abusive relationship with an extreme power dynamic. The terror can be felt as one flips through the pages. The paranoia will creep over you, and you will find yourself jumping right along with the main character. This is an amazing novel and I highly recommend it as a top King read.

I give this novel 4 out of 5 stars.

Tomorrow for the Missing Person Saturday feature, I am highlighting the missing person’s case of Jade Elyssa Henning. Next week for the Fiction Friday feature, I am reviewing the young adult horror novel, Lord of the Shadows by Darren Shan. Until then keep reading on; Nerd out!
