Premise: retired veterans telling their war stories

Harvey had organized a support group for us vets. I don’t know why I decided to go. I was never a big talker, so I didn’t see the benefit. Harvey made it very clear how discourteous he would find my continuous refusal to attend. I made it abundantly clear to him that I would only agree to go once. It was drizzling when I got to the rec hall. I took my time fastening my shoelaces before heading in. I could hear talking so I approached. Harvey was kneeling as he talked about his experiences with internment camps. I tried not to fret as I sat and listened as each former soldier talked about their experiences. After a few minutes, I needed to take a walk. I found myself in the nursery room pacing. I scarcely ever felt this way. I wanted to jump out of my own skin. Harvey had noticed I was missing and had come to find me. The group was able to help me work through that moment. I realized that if I kept going with the “out of sigh, out of mind” mentality, the only thing I way I would be granted peace was if I faced the horror that was my trauma head-on.
