Premise: a conversation between artists

Florence’s wife was shipped out on deployment, so we decided to do a creatives weekend together. We hadn’t done one in a couple of years. Florence is a painter and I’m a writer. We were treating our weekend together as a creative retreat. We rented a cabin in a town nearby. Upon arriving at the cabin, we immediately began setting up our workspaces. The trash cans created the dividing line between them. I would get lost watching Florence’s brushstrokes as I waited for inspiration to strike.

“What are you working on?” Florence paused to question me.

“So, Anne has an unexpected visitor show up and I am trying to find the right words to describe her feelings when she realizes who it is,” I sighed. “What’s your painting?”

“Well, the background is this galaxy feeling. As for the foreground object, I’m thinking of a skull. But I haven’t fully decided yet.”

We both worked for a while before either of us took a break. I only stopped a couple of times to grab snacks. I had gotten lost in my work and had forgotten to check my clock. Next thing I knew Florence was handing me take out she had delivered.

“I see you went for a partial skull.” I eyed Florence’s progress.

“Yeah, I like the half-face, half-skull look.”

“What’s the inspiration for the look on the face-side?” The expression looked familiar, but I couldn’t place it.

“The look on your face as you ponder what’s next for your book.” Florence giggled.

“Geez, thanks. I knew it looked familiar.” We laughed as we enjoyed our food.
