The Lake of Souls by Darren Shan

This week for the Fiction Friday feature, I am reviewing the young adult horror novel, The Lake of Souls by Darren Shan. This book was published in October 2003 by Little,Brown and has a page count of 272. This book is the 10th book in the Cirque du Freak series. The audiobook is 6 hours & 13 minutes in length and narrated by Ralph Lister. The following overview is provided from the B&N page: Darren and Harkat face monstrous obstacles on their desperate quest to the Lake of Souls. Will they survive the savage journey? And what awaits them in the murky waters of the dead? Be careful what you fish for…

This is the first time in the entire series that a book felt like a filler novel with a purpose. This is a well-written and absolutely wonderful book. But if you are expecting all the action and adventure that has been in previous novels in the series, you won’t find it here. However, as you read there is a feeling the entire time that this book has a major payoff later on. I just hope that the payoff is worth it in the end. You will find answers in the book to long-held questions. This is another fantastic novel by Darren Shan. If you are a horror fan or like vampire books, this series is a must-read series.

I give this novel 3 out of 5 stars.

Tomorrow for the Missing Person Saturday feature, I am highlighting the missing person’s case of Sherry Y. Madray. Next week for the Fiction Friday feature, I am reviewing the young adult fiction novel, Crank by Ellen Hopkins. Until then keep reading on; Nerd out!
