Premise: the story begins at a funeral

We had all nervously looked at each other. We hadn’t decided beforehand the order that we would talk at Gordon’s funeral. We just wanted to honor his last request to tell our favorite memory. We all silently stood up at the same time, none of us sure if we could do this without the support of the others. We had always been a tight friend group. It was rare that any of us would get together without the others. Everett was the one to start although we all took turns telling parts of the story. We all had the same favorite memory. And it would always be the one we would recall when talking about the five of us.

We had taken this epic vacation to California. This was before we knew that Gordon needed a bone marrow transplant before we knew he had cancer. To start the trip off, Gordon had somehow gotten himself an upgraded seat on the plane. We would only find out later that he had slipped his number to Sophie and she had upgraded him to flirt back. Gordon had booked the Airbnb for us, and we should have known something was up when he wouldn’t stop laughing on the way there. This jokester has picked a home where each room was decorated with a different breed of dog. Gordon had also gone ahead and assigned the rooms. He had tee shirts made to indicate the room that was ours. As you can see by our shirts today, I had the Chihuahua room. *Laughter breaks out* Margie had insisted that we do a tour of the Paramount lot. Sergio kept insisting on meeting an icon, so Gordon bought a couple of magnets with celebrities on them for him. *Sergio takes over the story* We had made the decision to play poker and wager our next activity on who won. Ever wonder why we all have a G tattooed on our earlobe now you know. *Florence is the next to speak* I don’t remember where we found the flyer. But there was this flyer claiming that it was the offshoot of a famous club in the area. We all thought it would be fun to check out. Turns out it was actually a casting call for a dating show that was going to be filmed at the famous club. None of us made it past the first round. *I chimed in* You mean because none of us could stop egging the others on. What kind of friends would we be then? We spent so much of that trip laughing and enjoying everything that life had for us. I think that was the most carefree the whole group was. Little did we know five years later we’d be here. To Gordon, who always knew how to keep the laughs going.
