Crank by Ellen Hopkins

This week for the Fiction Friday feature, I am reviewing the young adult fiction novel, Crank by Ellen Hopkins. This book was published in 2004 by Simon & Schuster and has a page count of 537 pages. This is the first book in the Crank trilogy. The audiobook is 4 hours & 31 minutes in length and narrated by Laura Flannagan. The following overview is provided from the B&N page: Kristina Snow is the perfect daughter: gifted high school junior, quiet, never any trouble. Then, Kristina meets the monster: crank. And what begins as a wild, ecstatic ride turns into a struggle through hell for her mind, her soul—her life.

TW: addiction

This work reminded me of how easy my slide into addiction was. I didn’t have the same experience as this book. But that thought process, that slide into that darkness was relatable. If you have ever wondered about the thoughts that go through someone in active addiction this is a good fictionalized telling of them. I was a preteen when I started using a substance to cope, by the time I was 15 I was using illicit street drugs. By 22/23, I knew that if I didn’t do something I would die from addiction like my first husband. This novel is intense. It will take you on an emotional rollercoaster. I highly recommend this book. The writing is hauntingly beautiful and deserves to be read by everyone.

I give this novel 4.5 out of 5 stars.

Tomorrow for the Missing Person Saturday feature, I am highlighting the missing person’s case of Chris Morales. Next week for the Fiction Friday feature, I am reviewing the biographical Audible Original, Certain Woman of an Age by Margaret Trudeau. Until then keep reading on; Nerd out!
