Certain Woman of an Age by Margaret Trudeau

This week for the Fiction Friday feature, I am reviewing the biographical Audible Original, Certain Woman of an Age by Margaret Trudeau. This Audible Original was released in March 2020. This audio work is 1 hour & 13 minutes in length and narrated by Margaret Trudeau. The following overview is provided from the Audible page: Margaret Trudeau, former wife of Canada’s 15th Prime Minister, Pierre Trudeau, and mother of Canada’s current Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, opens up with refreshing candor in her one-woman show, Certain Woman of an Age, the compelling true story of one of the world’s most fascinating figures. Through vividly told public and private anecdotes, the Audible Original weaves a raw and revealing journey of motherhood, loss, mental illness, and feminism.

This was a top-notch Audible Original. It is brilliant and honest in such a frank unapologetic way that will have you laughing and enjoying every minute of it. There was no sugarcoating of stories about mental illness, which I appreciated. It is a breath of fresh air when someone admits what a struggle mental illness can be. It becomes quite tiresome to always read stories of reaching “mountain tops” with none of the “yeah I was there for a time then slid backward and had to make the trip again.” Or is that just a pet peeve of mine? I am someone who knows that I will struggle with my mental health for the rest of my life. I have good days and bad days. Reading stuff that is always so positive (some bordering and others blatantly crossing into toxic positivity) makes my struggles and slides backward that much worse. It makes me feel like I am too weak. But listening to Margaret be so frank about herself was everything I needed when I was struggling. Life is messy and Margaret doesn’t shy away from that. This really an amazing audio work that everyone should listen to.

I give this Audible Original 5 out of 5 stars.

Tomorrow for the Missing Person Saturday feature, I am highlighting the missing person’s case of Kayla Rodriguez. Next week for the Fiction Friday feature, I am reviewing the literature Audible Original, The Messengers by Lindsay Joelle. Until then keep reading on; Nerd out!
