Premise: A babysitter snoops and finds something unexpected

Our family had gotten to know the new neighbors over a few months when they asked if I would babysit for them. I didn’t mind doing it their baby was the sweetest and easiest child I have ever watched. There was something about the couple that was off. Every once in a while, I would catch a look exchanged between them that seemed out of place for the conversation. They were going on to dinner and a movie this evening. Mrs. Jones had made some blackened chicken pasta for me to have and left a piece of tiramisu for me in the fridge. No prediction would have prepared me for what I would find tonight. Everything I had thought I knew would be proven false and a new narrative would begin to form. It’s not like they had some document that laid everything out for me to find. But there had been little things that were out of place and with the power of Google…INFORMATION! No matter how hard anyone, including the government, tries to hide, someone always finds out. I was borderline intruding when I was told not to be in the house. But I never entered any room that was off limits, I may have just stood in the hallway and observed what I could. The first thing that made me suspect that something was off, was the “freedom” banner that Mrs. Jones had. It was fall and this banner looked like it was a 4th of July decoration. I had noticed a spool of cotton thread on the bookcase, when I inspected it further, I noticed a newspaper picture had been hidden in it. There was no caption with the picture. It was a faded picture of what looked like a female in handcuffs walking into a building. With things that they had told us, and things clues I started googling. The thing that helped me put it all together was that Mr. Jones had cardinals randomly throughout the house. Most of them had the same distinct seal on them. This seal led me to a specialty shop located in Maine. That’s when I figured out that our neighbors were in the witness protection program. Now all the weirdness made sense, there had been a reason for it. I had no plans to tell anyone what I knew. I knew that I liked my neighbors enough to be more vigilant and watchful of the coming and going of people in the neighborhood.
