Premise: A new life on a new planet

I was walking around the ship trying to shake off the stiffness that comes from cryo-sleep. Earth hadn’t been livable for over a century when we finally found another planet suitable for humanity. Our population had been deeply controlled and all of mankind existed between a total of 10 space stations. Each station had something that it specialized in, and we worked together to survive. An exploration team had been sent to the new planet in hopes of finding it livable. If it was, we would start a colony and send for the others. There were 50 of us on this ship and there were two more ships that had already begun their journey this way with more supplies. I was on team one that would be one of the first to go to the surface. We had been woken up from the cryo-sleep system about an hour ago. Most of the crew was in the mess hall eating. I was walking the halls dreaming of all the food that we may finally be able to grow again. I had heard so many stories about fruits that were once consumed on Earth that we were never able to grow in the limited room available in space. I looked forward to tasting watermelon the most and made a real fried churro. We weren’t allowed to have fried food because of how unhealthy they were. Everything in space was highly regulated. I looked forward to the potential that a new planet could give us for cooking.

I was momentarily frozen when I heard my name over the intercom system. I had to report to the captain’s quarters. I was hoping that I wasn’t about to get another lecture about contentment as I did when I was sent on this mission. I had had it reiterated to me numerous times that I needed to be okay if things didn’t turn out the way I wanted them to. We were all trying to do our best and being abrasive wouldn’t make anything move faster or in the direction I wanted it to. I may have gotten into an argument with a few of the leaders who were postulating over our next step. You would think that with all the strain on our resources as is they would quit wasting time negotiating things to death. Thankfully, the captain was just letting me know that I was to take the lead when we touched down on the planet.

When we stepped out of the ship, it was an unbelievable sight. I was the first to test the atmosphere. I had never tasted air so fresh in my life. I had Isabel use a robot to explore and collect some samples. I went back into the ship to test exposure without the spacesuit. I grabbed a hooded pullover jacket since the air had been a little cool on my face. There were trees that looked like the beech trees in our herbology books. There was a small lake a short distance from the ship. I looked forward to finding out if we could go to the lake. Samples should be ready in a few hours and then the real fun for me will begin. This could be the start of my new home.
