The Vampire’s Assistant by Darren Shan

This week for the Fiction Friday feature, I am reviewing the young adult horror novel, Cirque du Freak: Vampire Assistant by Darren Shan. This novel was released in May 2000 by HarperCollins and has a page count of 256 pages. This is the second book in the Cirque du Freak series. The audiobook is 5 hours & 5 minutes in length and read by Ralph Lister. The following overview is provided from B&N: Darren Shan was just an ordinary schoolboy until his visit to the Cirque du Freak. Now as he struggles with his new life as a Vampire’s Assistant, he tries desperately to resist the one temptation that sickens him, the one thing that can keep him alive. But destiny is calling, The Wolf Man is waiting.

This was an emotionally charged sequel to the original novel. Like the original, it is a quick read. There’s a kinship between Mr. Crepsley and Mr. Tall that I have really enjoyed. I feel like this book does a wonderful job of capturing the struggles of an isolated child. I loved learning more about how the cirque functions and the different members of it. I really felt for Darren as he kept losing the people he formed a connection with.

I give this novel 4.5 out of 5 stars.

Tomorrow for the Missing Person Saturday feature, I am highlighting the missing person’s case of Michael Henley Ballard. Next week for the Fiction Friday feature, I am reviewing the royal biography book, Finding Freedom by Omid Scobie. Until then keep reading on; Nerd out!
