The Drawing of the Three by Stephen King

This week for the Fiction Friday feature, I am reviewing the dark fantasy novel, The Drawing of the Tree by Stephen King. This book was originally published in May 1987 by Grant and has a page count of 463 pages. This is the second novel in the Dark Tower series. The audiobook is 12 hours & 47 minutes in length and read by Frank Muller. The following overview is provided from B&N: Beginning less than seven hours after The Gunslinger ends, in the second installment of the thrilling Dark Tower series, Roland encounters three mysterious doorways on a deserted beach along the Western Sea. Each one enters into a different person’s life in New York – here, he joins forces with the defiant young Eddie Dean, and with the beautiful, brilliant, and brave Odetta Holmes, to save the Dark Tower.

I liked this Dark Tower novel better than the first one. However, that might be because I already knew the characters and world structure. So, it was easy for me to fall back into step with these characters. I enjoyed the changing of perspectives, the transitions were smooth. I did struggle with the problematic tropes and language. I had to remind myself of the time and perspective in which it was written. If you thought the first book was okay, I recommend reading this one to really know whether or not you want to read the series. The way King weaves his fantasy worlds within the real world is beautifully demonstrated in this work. I look forward to my next adventure in this world.

I give this novel 4 out of 5 stars.

Tomorrow for the Missing Person Saturday feature, I am highlighting the missing person’s case of Sheryl Lynn Hone. Next week for the Fiction Friday feature, I am reviewing the young adult horror novel, Cirque du Freak: Vampire Assistant by Darren Shan. Until then keep reading on; Nerd out!
