Premise: Escaping a natural disaster

We had been testing our new weather software out by the quarry when the sirens sounded. Clark had put down his epicurean novel and began driving towards the museum. The sky quickly turned from bright and sunny to dark and menacing. The storm quickly stirred up around us and I noticed the forming of twin tornadoes a few minutes behind us. Upon looking out the rear windows of the van, I could see the twisters senselessly tearing up anything in their path. Clark pushed the engine as much as possible, while the tornadoes were destructive, they were slow at steady. Helena had been waiting at the backdoor of the museum when we arrived. We only had to knock once for her to quickly usher us in.

“Do you think anyone else is headed here for shelter? Helena asked while going through her checklist.

“I don’t think so. There are two twisters on the ground, and we only barely made it here without incident.” I grabbed a towel to dry off some.

“Well, the generator is fully charged off the solar panels. We should be okay for at least 8 hours.” The sounds of the rain and wind were deafening against the roof.

“How many are you sheltering here?” Clark seemed uneasy as we made our way into the safe zone.

“I have 10 children who were here for the literacy program field trip. They are in the corner there coloring. I have 15 adults, 3 of which are part of the exonerated reintegration program. I am concerned about how the noise might trigger them.” Ruth double-checked her counts.

Clark was better with kids, so he decided to sit with them and help them through this scary experience. I sat with the exonerated people, as there was something about them that I just seemed to understand. We spent the next six hours together as destruction happened all around us.
