Premise: Big Time Deals in the Big City

My job had left me feeling complacent. Nothing felt like a challenge anymore. Outside of a feud between rival firms that would cause complications every once in a while. Nothing could have prepared me for what was to come. Madelyn had summoned most of us to the office on Saturday morning which was highly unusual.

“Thank you everyone for coming in today.” Madelyn addressed us in an indiscernible tone. “Overnight, the owners were made aware of a scandal that will ultimately challenge the public’s perception of the company’s philosophy. They have brought in a third-party firm to help handle the issues at hand. Please be as honest as possible when answering their questions. Once you have finished your interview, you may go home and return to work as normal on Monday. Don’t worry you will be compensated for your time.”

Sarah, Dorie, and I had decided to start the waiting game in the breakroom. Most of us had come straight to the office after waking up to the text message from Madelyn. So, most of us had missed out on our normal morning coffee routine. Bill had been the first interview. Simon and Dave had decided to try and search the web for any information on what was happening. Each interview varied in the length of time it took. It also seemed that there were various things each of us asked about. At least our office was on a higher level of the skyscraper, so I had an amazing view while anxiously awaiting any fallout. The day crawled by and I ended up being the last interview.

“Hello Colette, my name is Joey. How are you today?” The interviewer held out his hand to me.

“Fine.” The tension was think and I could feel myself beginning to sweat.

“I understand that today has been a bit strange, to say the least. By now I am sure you have read the press release in the news. That being said Madelyn is no longer a member of The Palace Company. Given the circumstances of her departure, the owners have asked for us to find someone to take Madelyn’s place.”

“Okay, but what do you need from me?”

“Well, we have asked everyone else if there is anyone that works for the company already. There have been a lot of fingers pointed in a lot of directions but the only person anyone thought could handle the recent clients and contracts was you.”

“Wait what?”

“Yes, we’ll need you to read over this employment contract and let the company know in 48 hours if you are accepting the position. Do you have any questions?” Joey smiled.

“I have a thousand but can’t figure out where to begin?” My head was spinning. “Can I email any questions I have as I read through the contract.”

“Absolutely. Here’s my card.” Joey handed me his card before leaving me in the conference room alone.

How was this my reality all of a sudden? I scanned the contract and noticed a few interesting terms for my new position. The most interesting was immediately upon accepting the position, I was required to hire someone with a background in charities. I would be responsible for working with that person to put aside 10% of the company’s profits every quarter for charity projects around the country. From what I could tell there was $5 million worth of deals for me to handle within 30 days of accepting the offer. I had never liked Madelyn, there had always been something off. With her shadiness, she had almost destroyed the company. Yet, because of the ungodly amount of money the owners have, I have a job still. Plus they had actually read my proposal of how to improve the company’s message. A passion project of mine was now a part of the company philosophy. This was a lot to take in, I was definitely going to take some of that 48 hours to think this through.
