Premise: Picking up a hitchhiker

We were a world at war. Community was a concept that no one practiced anymore. There were those who spoke of a time when community was everything. Now everyone was just trying to survive by any means necessary. It was hard to visualize a skyline that didn’t include ravaged buildings and smoke. I was looking forward to returning to base camp and getting some sleep on the mattress Jonah had found and brought back for me. I had been tasked with seeing if the abandoned hospital had any supplies we could use. Rosanna, the leader of the camp, had decided to send Rick with me just in case there was any trouble. Rick had been searching the hospital for beakers and a few other items he needed for his experiments. I was trying to use the hospital’s interface to see what medications they had kept here prior to the war. We had been on our way back to base camp when we came across a hitchhiker. I deferred the decision to stop to Rick since he held more authority back at the camp.

“She doesn’t look dangerous,” Rick said, after a few seconds of us pulling over and observing the woman. “See if she is okay, you come off as less threatening than me.”

I got out of the vehicle doing my best to interpret the woman’s body language as I approached her.

“If you get close, I will zap you.” She threatened.

“I’m not going to hurt you. I just wanted to know if you wanted help and/or a place to stay. My name is Georgette by the way.” I held my hands up where she could see them and did my best to reassure her that we meant no harm.

“I just need some food and a place to sleep for a few hours and then I’ll be on my way.” The woman leaned to get a better look at the vehicle and Rick.

“Sure, we can provide that. Rick and I are part of a camp of around 20 regulars with more that come and go as they need.” I reached my hand out to her.

“I’m Anna.” She took my hand in hers a moment before she began to cry.

I hugged her and then just held her until her body collapsed against mine. Rick helped me get Anna in the car. After we had been on our way for a few minutes Anna shared with us how she was trying to find her wife and child. Rick was sure that Rosanna could help her and that she would be welcome to stay as long as she needed at the camp.
