Premise: Conversation on a train

I was getting nervous now that I had changed trains to head to my sister’s house. This would be the first time we ever saw each other in person. It took two trains and over a day of travel to get there. I had had the train car on the first leg of the trip to myself, but the second train had been sold to capacity. It was the only thing I hated about being a solo traveler. There would be times when I was forced into a social situation with strangers that I dreaded. Not that anyone I had ever met was a horrible person, just I didn’t like having to socialize or sit in awkward silence for any amount of time. The train had started moving, I recoiled when the door opened and a trio of people entered the train car.

“Oh, hello.” The red-headed woman smiled at me.

I smiled and nodded. I had hoped that I was not going to have to endure 14 hours worth of conversations. But thankfully the group seemed enthralled in their own conversation and didn’t feel the need to include me or change the topic so we could all chat. It wasn’t until I overheard them talking about the modern enslavement of people that and found their passion for the topic worthy of praise. Little did I know that my small comment would plunge us into a whole evening of talking.

“How come you’re headed to Pittsburgh?” Marie asked finally asked me.

“I am going to meet my sister for the first time.” I smiled thinking of that eventual outcome.

“Roger and I are visiting family as well. Carl decided to come with, so he could continue his food tour blog.” Marie shared.

“Carl, you have a food blog?” This piqued my curiosity.

“Yes, I have been traveling to different places to try local specialties. I try to travel with a friend or two because it makes it more fun. So, when I find out a friend is going somewhere I ask if I can tag along.”

“That sounds amazing and so much fun.”

“It is. I am looking for getting some steak in my maw this trip.”

“Um, what?”

“I am looking forward to eating some steak. I have been using a word-of-the-day calendar to expand my vocabulary and improve my writing. The word yesterday was maw, and I hadn’t had the chance to use it yet.”

We all chuckled together. Carl also explained how he would wear pants a size too big with suspenders, so he had room to sample plenty of food while out. I began to believe that Carl was a unicorn. You know, one of those rare people who gets to do their dream job, and it not be a side job. By the time we arrived at our destination, I had absolved myself to pursue my passion and hopefully it would lead to worldwide exploration.
