Premise: starting over in a new place.

Unpacking was normally not my thing, but this time was different. After my work trip to Dubai, I came home, quit my job, and moved to a new place to start over. The trip opened my eyes to how unhappy I was and how toxic the environment I was living in was. I was putting away stuff while trying to listen to a song I had written. There was a knock at the door. Upon opening said door, there was a perky-looking female wearing a fedora on the other side.

“Hi, I’m April. I’m your neighbor across the hall. I was coming back from the café and heard the song playing. I was wondering if you could tell me who it is by.”

“Oh, hi. I’m McKayla. It’s an original piece that I haven’t released.” I blushed.

“Does it have a name yet? Do you have more music written? Sorry, I love all things creative and artsy.” April grinned at me.

“Would you like to come in and hear a couple of samples I made? Heiress is the only full song I have done at the moment.” I gestured for her to come in.

“That would be fantastic.” April plopped down on my charcoal-colored sofa as I muted the stereo.

I had a twinge of anxiety knotting my stomach. Befriending people was hard for me. I normally felt so awkward in social situations. I played the samples from my phone and watched as April’s sienna-colored manicure tapped along with the beats.

“I can’t wait to hear what those samples become.” April grinned. “They were better than the grating music that was playing in the coffee shop. I really wish they would stop the live music shows.”

“Well, maybe we could get together again when I have worked on them more and you can give me feedback.”

“That would be rad.”

It was at that point that I knew I was in the right place. Things felt natural and peaceful. Like all the puzzle pieces were finally in the right places.
