This week for the Fiction Friday feature, I am reviewing the young adult fantasy novella, Kalona’s Fall by P.C. Cast & Kristin Cast. This book was originally published in July 2014 by St. Martin’s Griffin with a page count of 160 pages. This is the fourth novella of the House of Night Series. The audiobook is 3 hours & 55 minutes in length and read by Caitlin Davies. The following overview is provided from B&N: From the Sun and from the Moon, two winged brothers are born: golden Erebus, playmate and friend, and mysterious Kalona, Warrior and lover, companions of the Goddess Nyx. From the first, Nyx loves them both deeply, but differently. With Erebus, she can talk and laugh and dance, and take joy in the games he plays among the humans of the Earth. With Kalona, the fire in her body burns bright, and she can rest in the solace of his strength and protection. But for Kalona, Nyx’s nights are not enough. Every second he is not with her he is filled with doubt and longing, and every time he fails to please her, he cannot forgive himself. Ruled by anger and jealousy of his brother, and consumed by his love for his Goddess, Kalona seeks the power to prove his worth, and to claim once and for all that Nyx eternally belongs to him. This was a fascinating look at how Kalona came to fall from Nyx’s grace. I enjoyed the background information that this novella provides about Kalona. It helps make everything Kalona does and says in the current timeline books of the House of Night series make sense. This book allowed me to see Kalona as more than just the bad guy who teamed up with Neferet to challenge Nyx. Kalona is complex and feels things in a different way than others around him. Being misunderstood and having the communication issues that Kalona had with Nyx, definitely plays into the creature he became on earth. It is not shocking to see why he was trapped in the earth as punishment. The anger he felt when we first met Kalona makes a lot of sense now. He was hurt and continued to act out his hurt in a self-destructive way until he was made to pay for those actions. I hope that now that we have this understanding of Kalona it means he will return to his place as Nyx’s warrior by the end of the series. Redemption is a huge theme in the overall story arc of this series. Stevie Rae has had redemption, Aphrodite has, Zoey has a few times over in different ways, and even Kalona’s own child has been granted redemption from a couple of other characters. I absolutely recommend the novella series and the main series to anyone who loves urban fantasy novels.
I give this novel 4 out of 5 stars.
