The Early Days of the Zombie Apocalypse

I must give the guys credit; I had always thought they were joking when they said they had everything planned out if a zombie apocalypse happened. Seth was currently switching the security system’s motherboard out for a better one. This one should allow us to run all the cameras off one system now. We were sheltering at Gustavo and Gloria’s cabin, which Gus had built himself with this kind of situation in mind. The moonlight was reflecting off the lake that was down the hill in the back. It was the only time we dared to open the internal window shutters. The night became the new time for us to play. We were in radio contact with a few of the neighbors who had also thought to shelter here.

Gloria was putting a few small drawings in envelopes that she was going to go out and deliver over the next few nights. She liked to give the neighbors something to help cheer them up during these dark times. The furthest neighbors from us were Jeremy and Lindsay; they were newlyweds when the zombies started showing up. They had planned on going on a honeymoon maybe a year after their wedding. With the plans canceled now, Gloria had been drawing them pictures from around the globe. The newest one was of the Eiffel Tower. Zyke and Yardley were our other neighbors. We get together every couple of weeks with them to have a meal and socialize. They were both into nature watching and would often tell us what night creatures they had been observing lately. Zyke was getting a picture of a buffalo and Yardley was getting a raven. Gloria had the biggest grin as she finished writing messages on the front of each envelope.

I was too restless to stay inside, I passed Gus working on the motorcycle in the garage as I went out to the driveway. I picked a new tulip to replace the dead one in the kitchen and a sycamore tree leaf to add to the wall in my room. I was slowly wallpapering the wall with leaves and marking the season’s change that way. I didn’t know how long we were going to have to deal with this but was going to do whatever I could to stay sane during the ordeal.
