Wishful Drinking by Carrie Fisher

This week for Spotlight Sunday, I’m reviewing the book Wishful Drinking by Carrie Fisher. This book was inspired by Carrie Fisher’s One-Woman stage show. Some may find the book disingenuous due to the snarky tone taken in the book. However, I feel like that snark speaks to the things that Carrie Fisher has experienced. Especially when you have a mental health condition and no one around you seems to understand.

I have been a Carrie Fisher fan since my older brother showed me Star Wars as a child. She reached a new level of admiration when she announced that she was dealing with mental health issues. Reading her snarky take not only on the life but the treatment she chose, hit home with me. I also must recommend the audiobook. Carrie narrates with a level of sarcasm that causes heaty laughter. Even though she is the daughter of Hollywood royalty, her stories of inner conflict hit home. It doesn’t matter what walk of life you come from, we all have struggles.

I loved the part where Carrie discusses her daughter. In the audiobook, you can hear the pride and love of mother to daughter. There are so many good stories, snarky jokes, and sentiments that I will be listening again to the audiobook. Her book gave me hope that others wouldn’t see me as broken and that there are others who understand.

I give this book 5 out of 5 stars.
