I am a Killer S1E10

“Since the reintroduction of the death penalty in the US in 1976, more than 8,000 people have been sentenced to death.” ~Netflix, I am a Killer series.

I am a Killer Episode 10 – A Matter of Life and Death
  • Death Row Inmate #0-375690
  • Wayne Doty

From the very start, Doty does not deny his guilt. He has asked for the electric chair as his method of execution. He was convicted of murder in March 1997.

His father was an alcoholic and abusive towards his spouses. Doty started stealing from his dad as a way to get out of there. Around fifteen or sixteen, Doty moved out of his father’s house. At the age of 23, Doty took a factory job in Plant City, Florida. He was drinking and using crystal meth. A fight had broken out between Doty and Thorne when he went over there trying to get more meth. He shot Thorne a total of six times to make sure he was really dead. He was sentenced to life without the possibility of parole.

In 2011, he was in a Florida prison and killed a fellow inmate. He believed that the inmate had been stealing from him. He pleaded guilty to the murder of his fellow inmate and in 2013 was sentenced to death.

As a child, Doty had been kidnapped by his father and told that his mother had died. At the age of fourteen, he found out that his mother was still alive. He saw his mother again around the age of 20. He spent about three months in Colorado.

Doty defended himself in the trial for the murder of his fellow inmate. Doty never asked for the death penalty, however, he recounted the events with brutal honesty. Doty pled guilty and was sentenced to death on June 5th, 2013. Three years later his sentence was declared unconstitutional. In 2016, Doty contacted newspapers to complain about the legal process. He claimed that the delays extended the suffering of the victim’s family. Doty has decided once again to defend himself in his resentencing. He does not deny being a violent person.

In a cold manner, he accepts responsibility for his actions. On February 26th, 2018, Doty addressed the jury at his resentencing for the final time. In less than four hours, the jury returned with its verdict. They sentenced him to death, but his execution date has not been confirmed yet.

I was able to find an additional murder charge from May 17, 2011. For that charge, he received a death sentence as well. Doty plans to waive all his appeals on his death sentence received in 2018, once the direct appeal is over. I feel like this episode really spoke for itself. If he believes he should die, I don’t have a problem with that.

Overall, I enjoyed this show and I hope that they come out with another season. I give this show a 4.5 out of 5 stars.
