The Death and Life of Marsha P. Johnson

This week for the Movie Monday feature, I am reviewing the documentary film, The Life and Death of Marsha P. Johnson. The movie was released in 2017 and has a running time of 1 hour & 45 minutes. The film is rated TV-MA with no further explanation as to why it received that rating. Starring in this movie are Kurt Wolfe, Sue Yacka, and Catherine Shugrue Doe Santos. The following plot overview is provided from IMDB: Victoria Cruz investigates the mysterious 1992 death of black gay rights activist and Stonewall veteran, Marsha P. Johnson. Using archival interviews with Johnson, and new interviews with Johnson’s family, friends and fellow activist.

This was a powerful documentary. It highlights what I feel needs to be highlighted in how certain cases have been neglected to be investigated properly by law enforcement. It should not matter what community a person comes from; their murder deserves the same amount of effort as another. However, that is not the truth of the lived experiences of many citizens in marginalized communities. This film highlights the extraordinary life of Marsha Johnson and the unexplained circumstances around her death. Unfortunately, Marsha’s case did not receive the attention it deserves because Marsha was a black transwoman. I highly recommend that everyone watch this film and really take a moment to understand why it is important to amplify marginalized voices.

I give this film 5 out of 5 stars.

Tomorrow for the TV Tuesday feature, I am reviewing the dramatic mystery series, 13 Reasons Why. Next week for the Movie Monday feature I am reviewing the action-adventure film, Shazam. Until then keep seizing the cinema; Nerd out!
