Sand Castle

This week for the Movie Monday feature, I am reviewing the dramatic war film, Sand Castle. This movie was released in 2017 and has a running time of 1 hour & 53 minutes. This film is rated TV-MA for the following reasons: moderate violence & gore; severe profanity; mild alcohol/drugs/smoking; moderately frightening & intense scenes. Starring in this film are Nicholas Hoult, Logan Marshall-Green, and Henry Cavill. The following plot overview is provided IMDB: The story follows a young soldier, and his introduction into the 2003 invasion of Iraq. Based on true events, it bears witness to the destruction, and horrors of war.

I have mixed emotions about this film. There was plenty of toxic military culture on display in this film. I know that this film is based on real events, but I am over the normalizing and excusing of disgusting toxic behavior within our troops. I have never been in combat, but they captured the moment when someone changes from who they were to trauma changed individual. It’s like you can see that the soldier is going to PTSD after that moment and you know that they were going to pull him from the field. That moment was so real to me and I felt so seen in that moment. I may not have PTSD from combat, but I relate to that moment when a soldier is changed forever. To have that play out on the screen in a way that was so powerful for me, I was in tears. This isn’t the worst military movie that I have seen but it’s not a favorite either. The story moves along at a decent pace and the only thing that really turned me off was the toxic behavior on the screen. Feel free to check out this film.

I give this film 3.5 out of 5 stars.

Tomorrow for the TV Tuesday feature, I am reviewing the dramatic series, Rectify. Next week for the Movie Monday feature, I am reviewing the documentary film, Circus of Books. Until then keep seizing the cinema; Nerd out!
