Roadwork by Stephen King

This week for the Fiction Friday feature, I’m reviewing the suspense horror novel, Roadwork by Stephen King writing as Richard Bachman. The book was released in 1981 with a page count of 274 pages. The audiobook is 9 hours and 37 minutes in length and read by G. Valmont Thomas. The following overview is provided from Barnes and Noble: Barton Dawes’ unremarkable but comfortable existence suddenly takes a turn for the worst. A new highway extension is being built right over the laundry plant where he works – and right over his home. Dawes isn’t the sort of man who will take an insult of this magnitude lying down. His steadfast determination to fight the inevitable course of progress drives his wife and friends away while he tries to face down the uncaring bureaucracy that has destroyed his life.

I have noticed a tone of anger maybe even rage within the two “Bachman” books that I have read but haven’t found in the King books. It makes me wonder what had King that angry. However, I can understand the upset of having a pen name outted. It’s funny how different we treat it now versus back then. Does anyone pay much attention after the initial outing anymore? I feel as a society we care less if we enjoy the content nowadays. It was I feel more accepted when J.K. Rowling’s pen name was outed. I really enjoyed this novel. The audiobook was well done. This story’s energy captured me and held my attention the whole time. This is definitely in my 5 top 5 King books.

I give this book 4.5 out of 5 stars.

This Sunday for the Spotcast Sunday feature, I’m reviewing the true-crime podcast, Court Junkie. Next week for the Fiction Friday feature, I’m reviewing the young adult novel, Burned by P.C. Cast and Kristin Cast. Until then keep reading on; Nerd out!
