Original Scene #19 – A Family Gathering on a Holiday

My siblings and I had gathered for our annual 4th of July barbeque. My brother, Roman oversaw cooking the food, taking the chance to practice his blessings since he was studying to become a rabbi. My varsity cheerleader sister, Fernanda, was bamboozled as to why her punk rock anarchist daughter, Iris, did not want to participate in any group activities. I enjoyed the irony, reminding myself to check in with Iris later when Fernanda was busy. Fernanda was an amazing mom, but she could be a bit too much at times, so I tried to be a good aunt and help the misunderstood feelings. My brother Nasir’s husband, Eduardo, was unloading the bales of hay, Fernanda had requested photos. I was hoping my wife had reserved enough weed for us to sneak off and smoke later. My family was too much to handle at times and thankfully my doctor found something that worked for the anxiety they caused. I watched my younger nieces and nephews playing together, pretending to vanquish the bad guys. Zyke came running up to me.

“Mommy, look want Aunt Olya got me.” Zyke handed me a fish toy of sorts.

“Ooo, a fish.” I turned it over in my hands. “Are you going to play with it in the pool?”

“Yes. She told me it was a surgeon.” He grinned taking it back from me.

“It’s pronounced sturgeon, honey.” I kissed the top of his head as he ran off towards Olya.

It was fun to watch everyone play and enjoy the afternoon together. Many of the kids were submerging toys in the pool so they were full of water before being thrown. The best part was when Nasir thought the kids were throwing actual food because he got hit with a plum-looking pool toy. I do not know where Olya found food-shaped pool toys, but she did, and they were a hit. Around the evening campfire, Fernanda was getting frustrated with Iris’s rhetorical questions, which were meant to cause my sister to question her worldview. My family was not a conventional one, and they may stress me out. But I would not trade a single one of them, for anything because this insanity breathes life into me.
