Mississippi Grind

This Week for the Movie Monday feature, I am reviewing the comedic drama film, Mississippi Grind. This movie was released in 2015 and has a running time of 1 hour & 48 minutes. This film is rated R for the following reasons: mild sex & nudity; mild violence & gore; moderate profanity; moderate alcohol/drugs/smoking; mild frightening & intense scenes. Starring in this film are Ben Mendelsohn, Ryan Reynolds, and Yvonne Landry. The following plot overview is provided from IMDB: Down on his luck and facing financial hardship, Gerry teams up with younger charismatic poker player Curtis, in an attempt to change his luck. The two set off on a road trip through the south with visions of winning back what’s been lost.

I never thought I would say this, but I found a Ryan Reynolds movie that I did not like. This film’s story was not interesting, the characters were dry and flat. I love Ryan and Ben in all the other projects I have seen them in. But this film was atrocious. I really have to caution anyone who thinks this movie is going to be good just because of the stars in it. Star power cannot save a poorly written-story that fails to make me do anything but a yawn. There were a few quips that I snickered at. I cannot recommend this movie, except to use it as background noise when needed.

I give this film 2 out of 5 stars.

Tomorrow for the TV Tuesday feature, I am reviewing the crime drama series, Alias Grace. Next week for the Movie Monday feature, I am reviewing the dramatic war film, Sand Castle. Until then keep seizing the cinema; Nerd out!
