Dragon’s Oath by P.C. Cast & Kristin Cast

This week for the Fiction Friday feature, I am reviewing the young adult fantasy novella, Dragon’s Oath. This book was published in 2011 and has a page count of 145 pages. This novella is the first in the House of Night novella series and was published between the 8th and 9th books in the House of Night series. The audiobook is 3 hours & 9 minutes in length and is read by Caitlin Davies. The following overview is provided from Barnes & Noble: In early 19th century England, long before he’s a professor at the Tulsa House of Night, Bryan Lankford is a troublesome yet talented human teen who thinks he can get away with anything… until his father, a wealthy nobleman, had finally had enough, and banishes him to America. When Bryan is Marked on the docks and given the choice between the London House of Night and the dragon-prowed ship to America, he chooses the Dragon – and a brand new fate. But when a dark power threatens, Dragon is caught in its focus. Though his uncanny fighting skills make him a powerful fledgling, is he strong enough to ward off evil, while protecting Anastasia as well? Will his choices save her—or destroy them all?

SPOILER WARNING FOR THE HOUSE OF NIGHT SERIES

I love this novella. I understand Dragon and his actions in the House of Night books so much more now. However, I really wonder what this will mean for him going forward in the series. I hope that the rest of the novella is as good as this. I really want to understand some of the adult side characters in this series more. Especially when it comes to some of the decisions that have been made in regard to Neferet and Zoey. This novella made the loss of Anastasia that much worse. This made Dragon’s despair from the previous novel palpable in the heart. I related to Dragon in making his way in a new world, being surrounded by strangers, and trying to find his place. I recommend that everyone read this novella between the 8th and 9th House of Night novels like it was published.

I give this novella 4 out of 5 stars.

Sunday for the Spotcast Sunday feature, I am reviewing the true-crime podcast, Sworn. Next week for the Fiction Friday feature, I am reviewing the gothic fiction novel, Garden of Shadows by V.C. Andrews. Until then keep reading on; Nerd out!
