Cujo by Stephen King

This week for the Fiction Friday feature, I’m reviewing the Horror novel, Cujo by Stephen King. This book was published in 1981 with a page count of 309 pages. The audiobook is 14 hours and 7 minutes in length and read by Lorna Raver. The following overview is provided from Barnes and Noble: Outside a peaceful town in central Maine, a monster is waiting. Cujo is a two-hundred-pound Saint Bernard, the best friend of Brett Camber has ever had. One day, Cujo chases a rabbit into a cave inhabited by sick bats and emerges as something new altogether. Meanwhile, Vic and Donna Trenton, and their young son Tad, move to Maine. They are seeking peace and quiet, but life in this small town is not what it seems. As Tad tries to fend off the terror that comes to him at night from his bedroom closet, and as Vic and Donna face their own nightmare of a marriage on the rocks, there is no way they can know that a monster, infinitely sinister, waits in the daylight. What happens to Cujo, how he becomes as horrifying vortex inescapably drawing in all the people around him, makes for one of the most heart-stopping novels Stephen King has ever written “A genuine page-turner that grabs you and holds you and won’t let go” (Chattanooge Times), Cujo will forever change how you view man’s best friend.

I enjoyed Cujo. It’s not my favorite King work but it isn’t my least favorite either. I love the use of different perspectives when telling this story. It made the story more compelling in my opinion. This novel is less graphic than others, so it’s a great one for anyone looking for their first King book to read. Donna was the character I related to the most. I enjoyed that there were messy aspects to everyone’s lives. The strength of those imperfections made the characters come to life off the page. The audiobook was wonderful to listen to. Lorna did a wonderful job bringing the characters to life. I will be re-listening to the audiobook I enjoyed it that much.

I give this novel 3.5 out of 5 stars.

Sunday for the Spotcast Sunday feature, I’m reviewing the true-crime podcast, The Trail Went Cold. Next week for the Fiction Friday feature, I’m reviewing the Young Adult Fantasy novel, Awakened by P.C. Cast and Kristin Cast. Until then keep reading on; Nerd out!
