Atypical

This week for the TV Tuesday feature, I am reviewing the comedic drama series, Atypical. This show debuted in 2017. This series is rated TV-MA for the following reasons: mild sex & nudity; mild profanity; mild alcohol/drugs/smoking; mild frightening & intense scenes. There are three seasons for a total of 28 episodes. Each episode has a running time of 30 minutes. Starring in this series are Jennifer Jason Leigh, Keir Gilchrist, and Brigette Lundy-Paine. The following plot overview is provided from IMDB: Sam, an 18-year-old on the Autism spectrum, decides it’s time to find a girlfriend, a journey that sets Sam’s mom on her own life-changing path as her son seeks more independence.

I love this show. My best friend has two daughters on the spectrum and this show has helped me understand my friend’s struggles as a parent. I have always tried my best to understand the struggles my friend faces but without seeing it up close and personal 24/7 there is no way I could. So, I do my best to consume as much representative media as possible. This series shows the fears and struggles that parents face when dealing with a lifelong diagnosis for their child. For people who may not understand how those on the spectrum see the world, I recommend taking the time to watch this series. Sam’s experiences with each of the members of his family are endearing. I absolutely love the relationship between him and Casey. I wish I had had a sibling relationship like that growing up. I encourage everyone to check this show out, as it’s better to understand others in our communities than it is to ostracize them.

I give this series 4 out of 5 stars.

Tomorrow for the Missing Person Wednesday feature, I am highlighting the Doe Network profile of William Zachary Bishop. Next week for the TV Tuesday feature, I am reviewing the family fantasy series, Goosebumps. Until then keep binge-watching the episodes; Nerd out!
